The first thing I do in designing my yearbook is plan everything out. One thing I learnt many years ago was the "5 P's" ... Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance !

Firstly look at what style the yearbook is going to be based on. Is it a formal book that outlines all of the Department Reports, Awards etc or would you like a fun, Magazine style of school year book with drawings and an abstract look about it. Once you've figured this out, I'd start working on a rough table of contents. What are the topics that you're likely to have in the publication?. This will obviously be based on your first decision. Here are a few things to get you started.

One of the most important things you cannot take lightly is the photography. This is a vital part in either having a good yearbook or a great one. If at all possible, hire a professional photographer at events like the school carnivals. If there are State & Regional sporting events, find out if there is going to be a photographer there & if you can obtain copies.
